The Peter Cummins Award

On 5 September 2026, the General Committee proudly presented the inaugural Peter Cummins Award, the Varunian of the Year Award for 2026, to Nima Chandler during a special ceremony on the RVYC Veranda. The award was established to honour individuals who represent the very fabric of our club. Named after Peter Cummins, whose life remains deeply intertwined with the history and spirit of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, it recognises members who serve as modern-day guardians of that legacy by consistently going above and beyond the call of membership.

The General Committee unanimously chose Nima Chandler for this inaugural honour in recognition of:

• Volunteerism: a consistent willingness to support club events and initiatives entirely behind the scenes, without seeking the spotlight.
• Mentorship: a warm, welcoming approach that fosters an inclusive atmosphere, ensuring new and seasoned members alike feel at home at Varuna.
• Leadership: a proactive dedication to keeping the club a vibrant, world-class community for everyone.

During the ceremony, Flag Commodore John Higham presented Nima with the Commemorative Certificate of Appreciation. Vice Commodore Tom Whitcraft delivered a tribute honouring Peter Cummins. Peter was unable to attend in person as he is receiving medical treatment, and the entire RVYC community sends him its warmest wishes for his recovery and looks forward to seeing him back at the club very soon.
